German-born Gertrude Hermes was a wood-engraver and sculptor. After being elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1963 and awarded an OBE in 1981, Hermes remained a lauded artist until her death in 1983. Her engravings have featured in books by the Golden Cockerel Press, Cresset Press and Nonesuch Press and much of her work is in many public collections including the Tate and the National Portrait Gallery.
