One of the most prolific and popular presses, operating between 1920 and 1961, the Golden Cockerel Press made handmade limited editions of classic works. Original illustrations, mostly wood-engravings, were contributed by artists including Eric Gill, John Buckland Wright, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Lettice Sandford and Eric Ravilious. It was founded by Harold Midgley Taylor, bought by Robert Gibbings in 1924 and later taken over by Christopher Sandford. The most important productions are those illustrated by Eric Gill: Troilus & Criseyde(1927), The Canterbury Tales(1929-31) and the Four Gospels(1931).
