Works
Giant of American 20th century literature whose influence continues to ripple through today’s writers. His novel A Farewell to Arms (1929) was based on his experiences as an ambulance driver on the Italian Front in WW1. A life of writing, womanising, drinking and sport – he wrote about bull-fighting (Death in the Afternoon, 1932), big-game hunting (The Green Hills of Africa, 1935) and deep sea fishing (The Old Man and the Sea, 1952) – helped create his macho persona. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.
