Writer of historical fiction, especially famed for his series of naval works set during the Napoleonic Wars following the career and adventures of the protagonist Hornblower, who was partly based on Nelson. He also wrote The African Queen (1935), made into a major movie in 1952 directed by John Huston, starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, for which the latter won an Oscar for Best Actor.
