Irish playwright who joined the IRA as a teenager and was imprisoned in an English borstal for two years and then was sentenced to 14 years for shooting a policeman in 1942. He wrote while in prison and after his amnesty in 1947; his plays The Quare Fellow (1954) and The Hostage (1958) brought him fame and success, but perhaps his best-known work is Borstal Boy (1958), an account of his incarceration.
