Poet and novelist he is best remembered for his epic tale Doktor Zhivago (1957). It earned the author the Nobel Prize and caused huge anger and embarrassment to the Soviet authorities. Typescripts were smuggled out of Russia to try and find a publisher and it was finally published in Italy in 1957. The semi-autobiographical saga of the love between the eponymous doctor and the tragic Lara told against the backdrop of revolution and civil war makes it one of the most famous Russian novels of all time.
