Montanari (Geminiano) Pensieri fisico-matematici, 2 parts in 1, first edition, titles with woodcut crown and floral ornament, small folding engraved plate in part 1, approbation f. at end of part 1, blank f. separating parts, woodcut decorative initials, some spotting and light staining, new endpapers, contemporary vellum, rebacked in later vellum, some wear to edges, stained, [Riccardi I/2, 170, 3 & 4; Zeitlinger 3055], small 4to, Bologna, Manolessi Brothers & Emilio Maria, 1667.
⁂ Rare at auction. 'This classic work contains investigations on capilliarity to which very little was added up to the end of the 18th century.' (Zeitlinger). Often referring to the theories of Galileo and Torricelli, these studies suggest a similarity between the ascent of water in capillary tubes and that of sap in plant stems. Montanari held the chair of mathematics in Bologna.
