Darwin (Charles) On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, first edition, half-title, folding lithograph plate with very short tear, 32pp. publisher's catalogue at end dated June 1859, occasional light soiling and foxing, slip of paper with "with Mr Darwin's compliments" in Darwin's hand tipped in at beginning, original cloth covers bound in as pastedowns and cloth spine at end, modern blue morocco, gilt, uncut, [Freeman 373], 8vo in 12s, John Murray, 1859.
⁂ "The most important biological book ever written." (Freeman) and, according to Dibner "the most important single work in science". This copy handsomely rebound but still retaining the cloth binding of Freeman's variant b.
Provenance: F. Swift (small ink stamp on title, possibly Francis Darwin Swift, grandson of Francis Sacheverel Darwin, Charles Darwin's uncle).
