Hammer Price: £1,700

Description

Hanway (Jonas) Proposal for Country Naval free Schools to be built on Waste Lands, giving such effectual Instructions to Poor Boys, as may nurse them for The Sea Service, first edition, dedication copy, 3 engraved titles, 9 engraved plates, most folding or double-page, 48pp. engraved music, engraved vignettes, offsetting, occasional foxing, contemporary diced Russia, gilt, green morocco label lettered in gilt "Presented to John Thornton Esq: Treasurer By the Corporation of the Marine Society May: MDCCLXXXIII" with gilt border to upper cover, neatly and sympathetically rebacked, edges repaired, folio, 1783.

Presented to John Thornton, the co-founder of the Marine Society and one of the dedicatees of this work.

This lavish production, part of Hanway's proposal to increase the scope of the Marine Society, was not well received, in part due to the excessive expense of the publication. John Thornton (1720-90) earned a substantial fortune as a merchant and devoted much of his later life to charitable and Christian causes.
