⁂ Ali Bey, the shaykh al-balad of Egypt, who declared the country independent of the Ottoman Empire before seizing control of the Hijaz and invading Syria. His rule ended following the insubordination of his most trusted General, which led to Ali Bey's exile then death outside the walls of Cairo.
