Darwin (Charles) The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, first edition, first issue, 7 heliotype plates (3 folding), numbered in Roman, wood-engraved illustrations in text, lacking advertisements at end, occasional spotting and light staining, contemporary calf, richly gilt spine in compartments and with black morocco label, upper cover stained, rubbed, [Freeman 1141; G&M 4975], 8vo, John Murray, 1872.
⁂ 'This is an important member of the evolutionary set, and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment' (Freeman p.141).
