Our Iron Roads: Their History, Construction, and Social Influences, first edition, wood-engraved frontispiece, additional pictorial title and illustrations, original pictorial cloth, gilt, very slight fading to spine but still an excellent copy, preserved in modern half dark maroon morocco slip-case with pull-off top, 1852, the first two original cloth, rubbed, all with slightly faded spines; and 3 others including vol.XXXIII of The London Magazine, 1764 including an article with an engraved plate of a horse-drawn coal waggon on a plateway, 8vo (6)

⁂ The first was much expanded from the second edition and now includes material from 1831. The last is the standard early work on the development of railways in the United Kingdom. Williams is exhaustive in his researches, and has an interesting section on the various pneumatic schemes, whether driven by vacuum or plenum, and an addendum on rail insurance. " During the half year ending 31st December, 1851 the number of passengers... was 47,509,392 of these 113 were killed and 264 injured."
