Golding (Arthur, translator) The Lyfe of the Most Godly, Valeant And Noble Capteine and Maintener of the trew Christian Religion in Fraunce, Jasper Colignie Shatilion, first edition in English, black letter, woodcut device to title, woodcut initial and headpiece, lacking final 2 blank ff., title a little soiled, B7&8 with tear running into text without loss, final f. of text mounted with outer half torn away with loss to much of text, closely trimmed at head, occasionally touching headline, minor worming to inner margin, occasional chipping to outer margin, ink ownership inscriptions to title and endpaper, bookplate to pastedown, early 19th century half calf, spine chipped and worn, corners bumped and a little worn, [STC 22248], 12mo, By Thomas Vautrollier, 1576.

⁂ A translation of Gasparis Colinii Castilloni, magni quondam Franciae amiralij vita, published in 1575, a biography of the Huguenot leader Gaspar de Coligny (1519-1572), a victim of the St Bartholomew's Day massacre. Rare, we can trace no copy at auction since 1955.

Provenance: Arthur Whiteside (early ink inscription); James Johnston (ink inscription dated 1728); Euphemia Thomson (bookplate); R. A. Scott Macfie (ink inscription stating the book passed to him in 1906 with family tree showing familial link to Thomson).
