Description

[Voight (Hans Henning)], "Alastair". Herod, for 'Salome: Drame en un Acte', original drawing in red and black ink over pencil, on wove paper, c.300 x 240mm., tipped into aperture mount, [c.1922].

⁂ Fine drawing showing the influence of the Decadent movement and incorporating the understated menace of Beardsley but also the later elaborate decoration of Erté, while the detail of Herod's robe and the plant and vase to the right exhibit a distinctly Asian aesthetic. The drawing first appeared in Fifty Drawings by Alastair, Knopf, 1925 and a similar version was used in the Paris edition of Wilde's text published the same year.
