Paine (James) Plans, Elevations, Sections, and other Ornaments of the Mansion-House, belonging to the Corporation of Donacaster, first edition, engraved title-vignette incorporating portrait of the architect by Grignion after Hayman, 17 engraved plates numbered 1-21, 4 double-page, title with contemporary ink signature "Rich Allanson" at head, contemporary ink inscription "John S.Wright's Book" on front free endpaper and with his ink stamp to title, some light soiling or foxing, mostly at beginning and end, contemporary reverse calf, rubbed, rebacked, repairs to corners and edges, [Harris 668], folio, for the Author, 1751.
⁂ Paine was appointed Clerk of Works at Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, in 1737 when he was only nineteen years old and he continued to supervise the building there until 1750, but Doncaster Mansion House was his first major project, from 1745-48.
