Description
America.- California Gold Rush.- Long (Lemuel F.) Autograph Letter signed to his sister Mary in New Hampshire, 3pp., postmarked envelope, small 4to, Columbia, Tuolumne Co., CA, October, 1854, folds with short splits, a few spots and finger-marks; and another ALs from the same to his brother, 1877, v.s. (2)
⁂ Long was a New Hampshire man who sailed around Cape Horn to California to mine for gold in 1853. He discusses mining on the river 'where conveniences were poor', and how the start of the rainy season has given a sufficient 'supply of water which makes business brisk again'. The letter to his brother in New Hampshire is a response to a request for advice as to whether he should relocate to California. Long surmises that while his time there has not been without hardships the area is full of wealth-making opportunities. He himself became a pioneer hop grower and Largo in Mendocino County is named after him.
