We made a date and Tom turned up at the Pierre Hotel, where I was staying at the time. He was carrying a plastic bag and in it was a copy of 'Vineland'. Not only a copy of 'Vineland' but an inscribed copy! I was profoundly touched." --from Tom Maschler's autobiography, 'Publisher'.
