Catlin (George, 1796-1872) Portrait of a seated lady wearing a hat and smoking a pipe, possibly Clara Bartlett Gregory Catlin, watercolour over traces of graphite on cream wove paper laid onto card, affixed at corners onto album leaf with ink attribution to Catlin by Shippard, 185 x 150 mm. (7 1/4 x 5 7/8 in), minor surface dirt and even browning, unframed, [probably circa 1830s]

Acquired directly from the artist, circa 1840s or slightly later
Captain William Henry Shippard; bound into an album with ink attribution to Catlin in Shippard's hand;
Then by descent to the present owners
