China.- Gonzalez de Mendoza (Juan) Nova et succincta, vera tamen historia de amplissimo, potentissimoque, nostro quidem orbi hactenus incognito, sed perpaucis abhinc annis explorato Regno China, translated from the German by Marc Henning, first edition in Latin, title in red and black, woodcut head-piece and decorative initials, woodcut Chinese characters, final 2 ff. blank, title soiled, water-stained, some other staining, lightly browned throughout, 20th century vellum, [Adams G-870; Cordier Sinica I, 14-15; Lust 27; Palau 105516; Sabin 27781], 8vo, Frankfurt, [?S. Feyerabend], [1589, the date at end of Praefatio reads M.D.XIC.].
⁂ First Latin edition of one of the earliest works on China, and one of the earliest European books to contain Chinese characters. It also contains an itinerary of the New World and the discovery of Mexico, translated by Luc de la Porte from the writings of Father Margin Ignacio, which details his travels to Mexico, the Canaries, Santa Domingo, Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.
