⁂ Published posthumously, this collection of supernatural anecdotes is wholly distinct to Defoe's earlier An Essay on the History and Reality of Apparitions. Defoe became interested in the supernatural late in life, and whilst believing in spirits remained sceptical of some claimants, dismissing some of the stories in this collection as products of overactive imaginations.
