Lot 341
Follower of Christoph Ludwig Agricola (1667-1719) Galatea, riding a dolphin drawn seashell, escaping the giant cyclops Polyphemus, sitting on a rock, playing a set of pan-pipes, [probably mid to late 17th century].
Estimate: £1,000 - 1,500
Description
Follower of Christoph Ludwig Agricola (1667-1719) Galatea, riding a dolphin drawn seashell, escaping the giant cyclops Polyphemus, sitting on a rock, playing a set of pan-pipes, gouache on vellum, with brown ink framing line and gold border, 130 x 150 mm. (5 1/8 x 5 7/8 in), some rubbing and loss of pigment, minor cockling to vellum, unframed, [probably mid to late 17th century].
⁂ The particularly fine rendering of the figures, displaying the technique and skill of an accomplished miniaturist, suggests a northern European artist familiar with the Prague School of painters, such as Daniel Fröschl (1563-1613), who were working in the Court of the Emperor Rudolf II at the end of the 16th century, and the German school influenced by the techniques of Agricola.
