Lot 301
Circle of Richard Wilson (1714-1782) Italianate landscape with three figures overlooking a lake with ruins on a hilltop, [mid to late 18th century].
Estimate: £400 - 600
Description
Circle of Richard Wilson (1714-1782) Italianate landscape with three figures overlooking a lake with ruins on a hilltop, black chalk, point of the brush, monochrome wash, heightened with white, on laid paper without watermark, 130 x 197 mm. (5 1/4 x 7 3/4 in), laid onto support, some spotting and browning, unframed [mid to late 18th century].
Provenance:
Paul Sandby (Lugt 2112);
The Folio Society, where acquired by the present owner, circa 1960 (as by Richard Wilson)
⁂ A beautiful and evocative landscape. The present drawing bears a close resemblance to a number of paintings by Wilson, such as Lake Avernus with the Temple of Apollo in the distance (see: W.G. Constable, Richard Wilson, 1953, p. 194, plate 69a, and cat no. 70b, Lake Avernus III), but the handling of the drawing, most notably the foliage on the tree and lack of delineation among the clouds, suggest another contemporary artist working in the circle of Wilson.
