Papercutting is a traditional Chinese art from the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 22 A.D.) The coloured, intricately cut papers are used in festivities, for prayers and as decoration. In his papercut portfolio, Ai Weiwei employs the medium to reflect on his life and work, the series works as a pictorial autobiography starting with his sojourn in New York from 1982-1993.
