Description

Electricity.- Franklin (Benjamin) Expériences et Observations sur l'Électricité faites A Philadelphie En Amerique, [translated by Thomas-François d'Alibard], first edition in French, title with small woodcut ornament, folding engraved plate, woodcut head-pieces and initials, title lightly foxed, occasional spotting, lightly browned, contemporary French calf, gilt, rather worn, but holding firm, 8vo, Paris, Chez Durand, 1752.

⁂ The first edition in French, and indeed, the first edition in a language other than English. The translation was made at the behest of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. Taking Franklin's idea of extracting electricity from the sky using a rod, Buffon and D'Alibard successfully collected an electrical charge in a jar on 10th May, 1752. Franklin gracefully acknowledged this feat.
