⁂ The first account of Caillié's pioneering expedition to Timbuktu Caillié travelled alone and disguised in Arab clothing, arriving in Timbuktu in April, he stayed for 2 weeks before travelling across the Sahara to Tangiers. For becoming the first European to return alive for Timbuktu, Caillié claimed a 10,000 francs reward from the Société de Géographie in Paris.
