The author's first book, published in an edition of 1000 copies in January 1820 and sold out by March. Described as written by "a Northamptonshire peasant" on the title page Clare's poetry concerns nature and the countryside and is written using Northamptonshire dialect. Following several bouts of depression and delusion he was committed to an asylum; Fenwick Skrimshire, the author of the other two items, was Clare's doctor and signed his certificate of insanity in 1841.
