Schoeller had previously travelled into northern Abyssinia with Schweinfurth and Alfred Kaiser. In 1896-7 he journeyed into Equatorial East Africa, recording his observations and discoveries, including Dar es Salaam, the Masai Steppe, Guasso-Nyiro, Uganda, the Athi plains and the Ukamba-Mombasa, which later became this 3 vol. work.
