China.- Alexander (William) The Costume of China, first edition, additional aquatint title and 48 plates, all hand-coloured, list of subscribers, some light offsetting, lacking half-title, contemporary aubergine straight-grain morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, g.e., slightly rubbed at extremities, [Colas 74; Lipperheide 1527; Abbey, Travel 532], 4to, 1805.
⁂ An excellent copy. Alexander accompanied Macartney's Embassy to the Chinese Emperor as a draughtsman from 1792-94. As well as costumes, the plates depict buildings, ships and other vessels.
