Birds.- Johnson (Theophilus) Illustrations of Typical Birds: First Series, 24 mounted gouache illustrations, heightened with gum arabic, printed title, corrections inserted by hand, one or two pencil annotations, marginal spotting, original vellum, morocco spine label, lightly rubbed, folio, [Dartford Heath], 1900.
⁂ Scarce, with no copies recorded on Library Hub and this the only copy recorded at auction. One copy of the 'Second Series' is recorded at the Natural History Museum Library.
Theophilus Johnson (1836-1919) was born in Tottenham. He was an amateur naturalist and artist, privately printing a large number of natural history title. He illustrated all of his works with original watercolours and drawings.
Provenance: Sotheby's 7th December 1993. Bradley Martin Sotheby's New York sale, 12th December 1989, with pencil note to blank.
