Zoology.- Transactions of the Zoological Society of London, vol.1-6 only, 359 lithograph plates only (of 372, lacking vol.5, paper I, i.e. pp.1-32 and plates 1-13), some folding, some hand-coloured, some heightened with gum arabic, some foxing, some original wrappers bound in, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spines richly gilt with red and green morocco labels, 4to,1835-66; sold not subject to return
⁂ A stunning set of the first few volumes of this highly important collection of natural history papers. Contributors include many of the great names of the day, including William Yarrell, J. O. Westwood, John Curtis, H.E. Strickland, P.L. Sclater, Baron Cuvier and W. C. Harris. There are several papers on birds by John Gould, with plates by him and Elizabeth as well as many of the other great natural history artists. The most prolific contributor, however, is Richard Owen, with much on the anatomy and skeletal components of species, including Gorillas, Chimpanzees and Orang Utans. There are also several papers on the Dodo, with volume 6 including Owen's On the Osteology of the Dodo, with a particularly large and impressive life-size folding plate.
