Description
Green (G[eorge] S[mith]) The Life of Mr. John Van, A Clergyman's Son, of Woody, in Hampshire, 2 vol., margins of titles and final leaves browned, contemporary calf, gilt-ruled borders, spines gilt and with red morocco labels (one or two tiny chips), small expert repairs to head of spines, very light rubbing to extremities, 8vo, for Francis Noble & John Noble, [?1757].
⁂ Rare, ESTC records only BL and Southampton copies in UK, and 5 copies in America (Beinecke, UCLA, Boston, Oberlin, Pennsylvania). Very little is known about George Smith Green (d. 1762), who in two of his other works, The Parson's Parlour [1756], and The Images of the Antients [1758], describes himself as a 'tradesman of Oxford'. He published 3 poems, 2 plays, and this, by far his most substantial, and possibly partially autobiographical, work.
