Hammer Price: £1,500
Description
Cicero (Marcus Tullius) Rhetoricorum secundus tomus, collation 2a-2Q8 2R8 (-2R8), printer's woodcut device to title, border ruled in red throughout, the word 'secondus' erased from title, handsomely bound in contemporary calf, the covers blocked in gilt with a single centre- and corner-piece block and a background of quatre-foil diaper, spine likewise gilt but slightly rubbed and faded, leather repairs to corners at joint heads and along joints in places, joints starting to crack, edges gilt and gauffered, Lyon, heirs of Sébastien Gryphe, 120 x 75 mm., 1560 § Dionysius Carthusianus. De perfecto mundi contemptu opusculum, printer's device to title, as well as faint early ink ownership inscription, small marginal paper repair and tear, occasional minor staining, contemporary red morocco, covers ornate in gilt in panel design with linear borders surrounding leafy motifs and central Christogram (upper) and author's name (lower), small discreet repairs in leather to spine ends and corners, edges to spine ends, edges gilt and gauffered but worn and faded, Lyon, Thibaud Payen, 120 x 75mm., 1561, 12mo (2)
⁂ An attractive pair of 16th century Lyon imprints, handsome in their contemporary bindings. It is possible the second here mentioned displays the work of a Roman bindery, bearing noticeable visual similarities to other known examples identified as most likely having been bound in Rome in the mid-sixteenth century (c.f. Hobson ‘Maoili, Canevari and Others’ 1926, plate 57 [no. 128, pp.116 & 127]).
