Yeats (William Butler) The Secret Rose, first edition, with extensive autograph corrections, additions and amendments by the author for a new edition, 1897.
Hammer Price: £15,000
Description
Yeats (William Butler) The Secret Rose, first edition, extensive autograph additions, amendments and deletions throughout in ink and pencil for the 1908 edition of the Collected Works, mostly in the author's hand though other hands evident in "Rosa Alchemica", plates by Jack B. Yeats, author's ink notes to front pastedown, partly unopened, original first issue pictorial cloth designed by Althea Gyles with "Lawrence and Bullen" to foot of spine, bumping to spine ends and corners, a little rubbed, morocco-backed slip-case (rubbed and a little marked), 8vo, [Wade 21], Lawrence & Bullen, 1897.
⁂ A remarkable copy that shows the detailed changes made by the author for volume seven of the Shakespeare Head Press Collected Works. Yeats' desire to perfect his writing led to numerous revisions of his works; here even the author's rewrites were revised - first written in pencil then overwritten in ink should the alterations be acceptable. Eight of the stories from the collection were excised entirely - the six Red Hanrahan stories which would appear in volume five of the Collected Works and the stories "The Binding of the Hair" and "The Rose of Shadow" which were removed entirely. Much of the portion from pages 125 to 206 covers these stories and has been left unopened, indicating that the author was given this copy with the express purpose of preparing it for the new edition.
