Lot 3
William Nicholson (1872-1949)
An Alphabet (Campbell 25A)
Estimate: £7,000 - 9,000
Description
William Nicholson (1872-1949)
An Alphabet (Campbell 25A)
The rare deluxe set of 26 hand-coloured woodcuts, mounted on card, 1898, each signed in black ink by the artist, from the edition of circa 30, printed by William Heineman, London, the full sheets loose and with the original vellum portfolio, each woodcut 245 x 197mm (9 5/8 x 7 3/4in)
⁂ The rare edition deluxe, including the two plates 'E for Executioner' and 'T for Topers' which were suppressed for the trade editions. Campbell notes that the size of this edition was not formally announced by Heinemann, whose advertisements merely stated that a few copies were available. In a letter dated 20 December 1897, William Heinemann says 'we guarantee that only 50 of these [hand-coloured sets] are printed'. This is a greater number than suggested by A.S. Frere (Chairman of Heinemann) in a letter dated 17 January 1956, in which he says 'the total of the edition recorded as being finished was 30'. We can trace only two complete sets of this de luxe edition at auction.
