Description

Algeria.- French conquest of Algeria.- Verdalle (Aristide, active c.1840-1860) and Jean Joseph François Bellel (1816-1898) and others. Composite album comprising of 3 detailed manuscript maps, and 40 prints and drawings, including a pencil and gouache study of an Algerian hill top town by Verdalle, with several lithographs initialled A.V., many with pencil inscriptions identifying locations, and other pencil studies also possibly in his hand, with a signed pencil study of a town by Bellel, a fine manuscript plan of Mascara with detailed topographical features by an unknown hand identifying locations of important residents, another two further unidentified manuscript plans in the same hand, a separate plan with vignette inscribed 'Vue de la Mosquee et da la Goubba', and with numerous Algerian scenes with local people, camels, and men in traditional Algerian clothing on horseback, pencil, watercolour, a few heightened with white, lithographs, various sizes, many tipped in, some executed directly on album leaves, some missing with blank leaves, a few loose, scattered spotting and browning, original gilt morocco, slightly rubbed and scuffs, oblong 4to, [circa 1850-1860s].
