Glauber (Johann Rudolf) A Description of New Philosophical Furnaces, 5 parts in 1, first edition in English, translated by John French, five parts and supplemental parts each with separate title but continuous pagination and register, first title within typographic border, woodcut illustrations, blank leaf 2Q1 present and advertisement/errata leaf at end, some browning and soiling, marginal paper flaw to 2G4, later half calf, rebacked, rather worn, [Wing G846; Duveen p.252], 4to, Printed by Richard Coats, for Tho. Williams, 1651.
⁂ The author's first book and one of the most remarkable on chemistry published in the 17th century. German by birth, Glauber appears not to have received a formal scientific education, but he was fond of experimenting and travelled extensively in search of learning. The famous "Glauber Salt" resulted from his discovery of a mineral spring containing this substance.
