⁂ By family repute, Barry's acquisition of Beerbohm's portrait of Marc-André Raffalovich was the result of many years hard effort pursuing a deal, the result of a previous owner being reluctant to part with it, and was one of his favourite Beerbohm drawings.
Marc-André Raffalovich was a French poet and author who wrote extensively on homosexuality. He is most remembered for his support of the arts and his enduring lifelong partnership with the English poet John Gray.
