Ashendene Press.- Francis of Assisi, Saint. I Fioretti del Glorioso Poverello di Christo, one of 240 copies on paper, Subiaco type, printed in red and black with initials by Graily Hewitt in red or blue, woodcut illustrations by J.B.Swain after Charles M.Gere, signed and inscribed by C.H.St.J.Hornby to [Sir] Michael Clapham with accompanying 3pp. A.L.s. loosely inserted and his book-label, prospectus also loosely inserted, original vellum with ties, spine titled in gilt, uncut, preserved in buckram slip-case (a little browned), [Franklin p.240; Hornby XXXI], 8vo, Ashendene Press, 1924.
⁂ Given by Hornby as a wedding present to Clapham in May 1935. His letter congratulates him on his new job and getting married, and "Now that my press is closed I have a number of odds & ends such as quoins, metal furniture, chases & galleys I could give you, should you want them".
Sir Michael Clapham (1912-2002), industrialist who was deputy chairman of ICI and Lloyds Bank, but originally trained as a printer at the Cambridge University Press, and worked at Lund Humphries and the Kynoch Press before joining ICI. He ran his own small Cloanthus Press during the 1930s.
