America.- Ogilby (John) America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World..., engraved allegorical frontispiece, title printed in red and black, folding engraved general map of the Americas and 17 double-page or folding engraved maps, all with vibrant hand-colouring in outline, probably by an early hand executed before c.1800, 32 double-page or folding engraved plates, 6 engraved portraits and numerous illustrations, list of plates at end, general map of Americas with some loss to foot, plate Angro op Tercera lightly creased and with small hole within image, plate Nova Mexico with vertical tears repaired with paper to verso but no loss, plate Viztlipuztli with short tear into image but no loss, map of Jamaica with light creasing and few short tears to foot but no loss, occasional light creasing and couple other short marginal tears to plates, browning to few plates, occasional light spotting or soiling, contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments, extremities quite worn, rubbed, upper joint split, lower starting but both holding, [Sabin 50089; Wing O165], folio, Printed by the Author, 1671.
⁂ Ogilby's lavishly illustrated and highly influential account of the Americas, the maps in this copy with vibrant hand-colouring in outline, probably by an early hand executed before c.1800. This is a reissue of the 1670 first edition (Wing 0164), with cancel title page and added appendix. The work is an English translation of a monumental work on North and South America by Dutch writer Montanus, De nieuwe en Onbekeende Weereld, with considerable additions on New England, New France, Maryland and Virginia, compiled mainly from English sources. It includes a short section on "New Netherland, now call'd New York", with accompanying map "Novum Belgium quod nunc. Nov. Jorck vocatur". Other maps include Maryland, Southern Virginia and Florida, Jamaica and Peru. This copy is with the plate "Arx Carolina" at p.205 as called for, but does not include the map "Barbados", not mentioned in list of plates but sometimes present.
