Elizabeth I's chief minister.- Cecil (William, first Baron Burghley, royal minister, 1520/21-98) Letter signed to Thomas Greseley [Thomas Gresley], folio, ½p., "ffrom ye Co[u]rt", 26th May 1585, authorising him to hand over "certaine evidence and C[ourt] rolles" from the possessions of Thomas Paget, fourth Baron Paget (c. 1544-90) (who had fled abroad in 1583 on the discovery of the Throckmorton Plot), text a little faded but still legible, folds, creased and browned.

⁂ An important letter. Paget, a supporter of Mary Queen of Scots had fled abroad in 1583 after discovery of the Throckmorton Plot. "His estates in England were quickly seized by the government and in 1587 he was convicted of treason by the act of attainder which also condemned the Babington plotters." - Oxford DNB.

Sir Thomas Gresley, Kt. (b. 1552, d. 1610), Sheriff of Staffordshire 1583-84 and played a part in the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots.
