Popish plot.- S. (T.) The Perplex'd Prince, decorative woodcut to title, title a little soiled and with a few early in scribblings, printing flaw to C5 with loss to a few words of text, occasional browning, a few ff. closely shaved at head, bookplate to pastedown, 19th century half calf, joints cracked, chipping to spine ends, [Wing S174], 12mo, for R. Allen, [?1682].
⁂ Rare fictionalised account of the Popish Plot, we can trace no copy at auction since 1931. Ostensibly telling the story of the fictionalised country of Otenia and the plotting of the religious faction known as the Gregorians against Good King Conradus, The Perplex'd Prince in fact presents a credulous rendition of the so-called Popish Plot as presented by Titus Oates. The anti-Catholic nature of the work is most apparent in its dedication to William, Lord Russell, a leading exclusionist figure who would be executed for treason in 1683.
