Sallustius Crispus (Caius) De coniuratione Catilinae. Eiusdem de bello Iugurthino, collation: a-s8 t4, italic type, title and verso of final f. with woodcut printer's device, initial spaces with guide-letters, some faded early ink marginalia and passage marking at start, occasional spotting or light staining, lightly browned, pink marbled endpapers, later vellum over boards, yapp edges, spine gilt and with black morocco label, little spotted and marked, 8vo (151 x 95mm.), [Venice], [House of Aldus & Andrea Torresani], [April, 1509].

⁂ Rare first Aldine edition of Sallust's two historical works, accompanied by Cicero's speeches against Sallust and Catilina, and other pieces. The work is dedicated to Bartolomeo d'Alviano, a mercenary commander of the Venetian forces, who distinguished himself in March, 1508 with the defeat of the Imperial Army of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian I.

Provenance: 'Dono di D. Fortunato Federici' (18th century ink inscription to front free endpaper within a later ink bibliographical note); 'Purchased from M. Morton-Smith, Dec. 1959' (pencil note and cutting of the catalogue entry to rear endpaper); thereafter remaining with our vendor.
