La Chappelle (George) Recuel de Divers Portraits des Principales Dames de la Porte du Grand Turc, first edition, engraved title and 12 plates, title trimmed at foot with expert restoration, some splits at gutter with expert restoration, one plate with tear into image and expert repair, one or two ff. with small loss to fore-edges and expert restoration, bookplate, twentieth-century calf, a little rubbed, [Atabey 648; cf.Blackmer 936], small folio, Paris, Antoine Estienne and Le Blond, 1648.
⁂ Rare. The last copy that we can find at auction was at Christies in 1967.
"The first edition appeared in two issues, one with the imprint of Antoine Estienne only: in that issue the small cartouche at the foot of the engraved title is empty; the other issue contains the imprint of Estienne but also that of Le Blond in the small cartouche." (Blackmer)
It is rare to find such detailed and exquisite depictions of female costume of the Levant, particularly from this period.
