[Paulus Diaconus, compiler] Homiliarius doctorum qui omeliarius dici solet: in evangelia sacratissima dierum dominicalium ac feriatorum, 2 parts in 1, collation: a-z6 ζ6 : A-I6 K4 L6, titles printed in red within woodcut historiated borders depicting cherubs, the general title with woodcut printer's device at centre and the second title with woodcut vignette depicting St. Sebastian, disciples, popes, monks, and nuns, all with early hand-colouring, hand-coloured woodcut decorative initials, early marginalia in red ink throughout, at end 3pp. early manuscript in black ink 'Confessio Constantini Imperatoris', wormholes throughout and occasional short worm trace in margins, some spotting and mostly light staining, lightly browned, later endpapers, later calf-backed boards with 16th century choir leaf to covers, rebacked in modern calf in compartments, preserving majority of original backstrip, small hole to leaf on upper cover, some staining, folio (298 x 194mm.), [Lyon], Jean Clein, 1516.
⁂ Handsomely printed rare edition at auction of the homilies collected by Paul the Deacon upon the request of Charlemagne. Paulus Diaconus or Paul Warnefried (c.720-c.799) was a Bendictine monk, scribe, and historian of the Lombards.
