Summa super titulis Decretalium, double column, collation: a-z8 ?8 ?8 ?8 A-R8 S T6, 356 ff., 76 lines and headline, Gothic type, initial spaces with guide-letters, y6&7 with a few small ink stains in text, y8 small triangular piece cut from lower margin, occasional spotting, mostly marginal small worm holes or very small traces, mostly marginal staining (including some ink spots), new endpapers, 17th century red armorial morocco, richly gilt, spine skilfully repaired, some worming, rubbed and scuffed, folio (402 x 268mm.; binding 406 x 292mm.), Venice, Thomas de Blavis, de Alexandria, 4 June, 1490.

⁂ A very good wide-margined copy of this extensive commentary on the Decretals. This edition is rare at auction. The author, who was also known as Hostiensis, was one of the most important jurists of his time. He taught in Bologna and Paris, served as an ambassador of King Henry VIII of England to the Pope, and was appointed archbishop of Embrun. At the end of his illustrious career he was made Cardinal of Ostia and Velletri. He is mentioned by Dante in his Commedia (Paradise, XII, 82-85).
