Mechel (Christian von, publisher) Suite de Differens Costumes de Paysans et Paysannes de la Suisse, 26 exceptional hand-coloured aquatint plates, a couple with slight spots to margins, loose in original printed wrappers, rebacked and foxed, preserved in morocco-backed board chemise and matching slip-case, [Colas 2027 (1785 edition); Bobins 1252], 4to, Basle, 1791.

⁂ Rare collection of fine Swiss costume plates by the prominent engraver, publisher and art dealer Mechel (1737-1817) who was forced to flee Basel in 1797 after financial ruin caused by the Revolutionary Wars and re-established his business in Berlin. Only one appearance at auction (2000).

Provenance: Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig, Freiherr von Warthausen (ink stamp on inside of upper wrapper and on verso of each plate, sometimes with show-through into lower margin)
