⁂ First published in 1609, this second edition is the first to include plates engraved by Jacques Callot, who was commissioned by Cosimo II de Medici. The author, a Franciscan prior, lived in the Holy Land from 1593 to 1597, during which time he surveyed its ancient sacred buildings, particularly those of Jerusalem.
