Lot 5
Nelson's Copy.- Dialogues of the Dead, vol. 2 only (of 2), Admiral Lord Nelson's copy with dated ink ownership inscription "Horatio Nelson", for T. Pridden, 1775.
Hammer Price: £5,500
Description
Nelson's Copy.- Dialogues of the Dead, vol. 2 only (of 2), Admiral Lord Nelson's copy with dated ink ownership inscription "Horatio Nelson" to front endpaper, contemporary calf, red morocco label to spine, a little cracking to joints, and small tear lower joint foot, 12mo, for T. Pridden, 1775
⁂ Rare to find a copy thus inscribed, "Horatio Nelson, Windsor August [...] 1784". The inscription predates the loss of Nelson's right arm at the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (1797) by some years, and is therefore written in his right hand, the script being considerably different from that of his latter left handed penmanship. Similarly, it dates to when Nelson was merely a Captain in the Royal Navy, during this year he made a brief visit back to England, considered standing for Parliament, before he received command of the HMS Boreas, active in the West Indies.
