Description

Brockman (James, binder).- Beerbohm (Max) Zuleika Dobson or An Oxford Love Story, first edition, advertisement leaf at beginning, half-title, bound in Oxford dark blue goatskin, by James and Stuart Brockman, with onlays of oars in black calf & citron goatskin, back-to-back heads in black goatskin tooled in gilt in outer corners and silhouette of Oxford buildings in black calf across bottom partly obscured by parallel gilt lines, dark & light blue marbled endpapers, t.e.g., others uncut, binder's printed note signed by James Brockman and dated 2017 bound in at end, preserved in modern dark blue cloth drop-back box, gilt-stamped black goatskin label inset to spine, binders' ticket inside lid, 8vo (c.200 x 135mm.), 1911.

⁂ A specially-commissioned binding on this famous Oxford tale. The binder's note reads, "The design illustrates aspects of Oxford taken from the story - the oars of Eights Week, the Sheldonian Emperors and the Oxford skyline (behind the gold lines) suggesting the Undergraduates sinking below the water of the Isis...".
