Epping Forest.- Driver (Robert, surveyor) Plan in Four Parts of Waste Lands in the Northern Portion of Epping Forest, within the Meaning of the Epping Forest Act, 1871, partially coloured map divided into four sections, mounted on linen and folding, each section 640 x 440 mm. (25 x 17.5 inches), overall 50 x 35 inches, on a scale of 6.4 inches to 1 mile, plans 3 and 4 water-stained, affecting colour of linen more than map surface, which is lightly stained; Plan in Three Parts of Waste Lands in the Southern Portion of Epping Forest, three sections mounted on linen and folding, each 820 x 320 mm. (33 x 12.5 inches), overall 33 x 37.5 inches, the seven parts each folding into cloth covers and together in one cloth slip-case, 8vo, [c.1880].
⁂ Very scarce. The maps were produced as part of the negotiations in which the City of London took over the forest to protect it from development and to open it to the public. They provide a very detailed survey of the whole of the forest, not just the nominal waste land. Although the maps are not dated, surrounding developments suggest a date of around 1880, and this is consistent with a related manuscript map in the Public Record Office signed by Driver and dated 1882. Driver was a founder member and one-time President of the RICS, greatly concerned with the interests of the poorer members of society.
